AMA national land speed record set by Team Ammo Can

September 17, 2007 – 10:08 am

Team Ammo Can (sponsored partly by Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Harley-Davidson’s parts dept.) has set a new national record in the Modified/Partially Streamlined/Pushrod/Gas 1350cc class at the Bonneville salt flats.

The previous record was 155 mph, Pete Strunk rode the Buell XBRR to two run average of 168.2195 mph. Their best run was in dry conditions, hitting 172.022 while bouncing off the soft rev limiter for the whole timed mile. Pete and crew chief Jon Stauffer then changed the gearing to attempt to go 180 mph.

Then the rains came. The salt got wet and every one was slower. Pete said he was spinning the rear tire and the bike was weaving the entire timed mile when they set the record. The slippery conditions caused two bikes to crash, the ACK Attack streamliner, and a young lady riding a turbo Hayabusa crashed at 186 mph, breaking four ribs and puncturing a lung. Pete said the weave got them both. Way to go Team Ammo Can!

  8. Bravo Boys!
I will see you on the salt next season when I unveil the newest Bluebird. It is a V-12 two-stoke powered cycle based on a Brough-Superior. We are currently finishing the twelve expansion chambers.
